Default what profs to pick vs my fav wow classes...

Hey everyone, I know theres a lot of posts similar to this one, but i couldnt find one close enough to what i need to know

i played wow since after the beta and i was a very very good mage and warrior. i understand which classes are closest to those but arent there way too many of each of those already?

i know its all pref and i should just try them all, but may i ask what you guys think would fit me most of these?

Warrior/Necro
Warrior/Element
Element/Necro
Necro/Element

im leaning towards W/N or either of the bottom two. Also, i only have Nightfall right now, if that helps anyone give me advice.

help a noob that hasnt even received his copy of gw but cant wait for it to arrive!

thanks everyone... or no one if i get no responses...

Well, the profession system in GWs turns your character into something of a swiss army knife; you'll find that certain areas benefit from certain secondaries to exploit the weaknesses of mobs, certain team builds require you to run certain secondaries for maximum efficiency and so on..

So even though one combination might be more appealing, you'll most likely find yourself switching between them quite often. So don't worry too much about secondary for now.

It's not like wow here: you can raise yourself a character in a few days at a nice even pace, so you won't have any trouble raising both of these professions fairly quickly. Just roll whatever you're feeling most

Well, the beauty of GW is that profession-wise a person can fill many roles, and be affective with many different builds. My point being, is that since there were two professions that you mainly played and enjoyed in WoW you have a wide range of combos to choose from in GW.

If you just wanna start with one character, then don't even worry about the secondary choice. At this point you still need to learn the game dynamics and basic profession usage. Therefore either primary profession you choose, you should concentrate on the primary skills, and not the secondary profession skills...

Primary Warrior is fairly self sufficient and has a good survival rate due to naturally high armor level, and a variety of utility skills in the Strength and Tactics that help them to survive. This profession is fun to play if you enjoy close range melee attacks from axe, sword and hammer. They rely more on adrenaline skills rather then energy usage skills... both elements you will learn more about in game...

If you wanna play as a mage, primary Elementalist is probly the best fit. This profession uses several element attributes to and large area-of-effect spells to damage multiple enemies at once. From Fire, to Water/Ice, to Air/Lightning attacks, the elementalist can dish out large amounts of damage backed by a primary attribute that boosts their energy reserve allowing them to sustain a good amount of skill usage. This class is close to what you call a "glass cannon". As with all casters, they have a lower base armor, so they require a bit more protection from support professions if they do not equip any survival skills themselves.

I hope those intros give you an idea more of what you would enjoy. I would say good starting secondaries for any primary profession when starting out is /Monk, only because you won't need to use much of any secondary profession skills, yet the monk secondary can give you access to some useful utility skills or resurection skills. As a new player, you can also use the search engine on Guildwiki.org to find out detailed info about any other questions you may have.

Hope that helped and i hope you have fun in GW!
cheers

A major thing about the profession system in GW is that while the skills from your primary profession will have the greatest synergy with what your profession is designed to do, you can use skills from your secondary profession to cover your weaknesses or to enhance your strengths.

For example, a Warrior has no native skills that allow him to remove conditions from himself, but he can use a skill like Plague Touch from his Necromancer secondary to quickly get rid of conditions and inflict them back on his opponents. Or, a Warrior with an Elementalist secondary could use Conjure Flame along with a fiery weapon to inflict even more damage with his attacks.

There are hundreds and hundreds of different skill combinations that you can try out, no matter what combination of professions you choose to be (and once you get far enough into the game, you'll be able to change your secondary profession too). Half the fun is seeing what combo possibilities you have available to you and seeing which of these works best for you and for the areas you're travelling through.

In guild wars, you can change your profession and change your attributes at will anytime you are in a town/outpost. Therefore no any set X/X profession is going to float your boat, you'll have to try different things to see what you like.

My noob warrior fresh from Ascalon is currently a W/N. I have all three campaigns though, so I rarely need to invest in whatever my secondary profession is. She's going to be a Headbutt + Plague Touch warrior. It makes me lol so.

Yes there are.

If you want to play GW like WoW, you'll be not only disappointed, but in a world of pain. So you might want to look around after you start playing.

Player roles are defined by their part in team and their current build, not by primary profession.

Nightfall is stand-alone. You must be thinking of Eye of the North.

@darkk wound - Prophecies, Factions and Nightfall are separate stand-alone campaigns/chapters that can be linked through your account. You can buy any one of them, in any order, and play the game. Only the expansion, Eye of the North requires owning a chapter to play it.
